BEAUTIFUL WOOD STAIRS!!

Have you ever wished and wished for something thinking it would never come true? Then it does come true and it’s way better than you could have ever dreamed.

Our brand new beautiful wood stairs is that dream for me. I’ve wished for these stairs for years and years and now their all mine!! (and my family’s)

We’ve lived in our house for 19 years and looking at the carpet on the stairs, you could tell!! Every time I walked up or down them, I just wanted to rip the carpet up. I felt like every stain, worn spot, and dirty spots were yelling at me.

When we pictured how we would complete the stairs, we had NO idea how wrong we were going to be.

We ripped up the carpet first. That was a great feeling!!

Then we removed the old paint from the railings and repainted them.

We did our research (and by “We” I mean the LOML!!) and we found this great idea.

The first step in laying the wood stairs was to remove the old treads and risers. The LOML read a blog where the writer said to use a car jack to pop the tread off the joists.

In a perfect world, this would have been an ingenius plan. But, alas, we don’t live in a perfect world. We found out the treads were built INTO the skirt so they were not going to budge!!

PLAN B……..

We hired a professional handyman to remove the old treads and risers where we also found out that the skirt was the only thing holding up the stairs. When the guy removed the treads, he found it was hollow! So he had to build three joists under the stairs ~ one on each end and one in the center to hold up the stairs.

This picture gives me heart palpitations!!

Blog fail!!!! We didn’t get a picture of the joists that the handyman built but believe me it was impressive!!!!

We thought we were so screwed with this project but the handyman saved us!!!

Here is the end result which we cannot love anymore!

We absolutely love our new stairs!!!!! As with any diy project, you have to be flexible. So many times, a project will not happen the way we plan but the end result is always worth the hardship, anxiety, swear words, and exhilaration!!

And, my favorite…..
